Questions to ask your child Before, During, and/or After he/she reads:
Before:
Activating Background
· What does the title make you think of?
· What does the chapter title make you think of?
· What do the pictures make you think of?
During and/or After:
Visualizing
· How did you feel when (fill in with event from book)?
· What did you picture in your head when (fill in with event from book)?
· When you read (fill in with event from book), what did you picture in your head? Why?
Questioning
· What questions do you have about the book?
· If you could talk to a character, who would it be and what would you say or ask?
· What did you agree with the author about?
· What did you disagree with the author about?
· If you were the author, what would you have done differently?
· What did you wonder when you were reading?
Inferring & Predicting
· Make a prediction about what is going to happen next.
· What do you think the character really meant when he/she said (insert quote from book)?
Summarizing/Retelling
· Why were the illustrations important?
· Was the book/chapter hard to follow? Why?
· What parts of the story did you NOT understand? Why?
· What was the main idea?
· Retell what happened in the chapter/book.
· Did you like or dislike the chapter/book? Why?
· What part/chapter/book did you like the best? Why?
· Which character did you like the most? Why?

Synthesizing
